Pets and Apartment Living

Let’s talk pets. Everyone loves having a pet, most kids beg their parents for a pet at some point in their life, with some parents being more swayable than other parents. Pets can range from a variety of animals from cats and dogs to snakes and lizards. But how do pets work when you are renting an apartment or other rental property?

Well, let’s start with the basics. As a pet owner who rents, almost every property will ask you for an additional deposit for your pet—some places will even ask for pet rent, which I have seen range from $25 to as much as $150. But not all places will ask for pet rent, so that is not always the case. On top of the pet rent and deposit, most places will ask about all the information that pertains to your pet—like pictures, vet records, general information on them in case they get out in the complex/community.

In the research for doing this blog I also learned a crazy fact. There are some places that will actually do a DNA test on all dogs that move onto a property. This is to ensure if they find any dog feces, that they can DNA test it and they can write a citation to the owner of the pet for the lack of maintaining their pet.

Now, if a property does allow pets there are stipulations to what is allowed. Most places will not allow big breed dogs that exceed a weight limit of a certain number, for dogs it is generally about 125lbs, for cats its generally between 25-30lbs. This is in hopes to keep the noise that the pet makes to a minimum. They also don’t allow certain breeds at all, generally breeds that are considered aggressive.

The places that don’t allow pets I have found are generally more high-end apartments. They don’t allow pets because of the high volume of noise complaints from dogs barking and the lack of people cleaning up after their pets a lot of the time. But the places that don’t allow pets are far scarcer than the places that do.

Overall, most places do allow pets. If you’re willing to pay a little more for your furry companion then renting and pet ownership is a no brainer.
